Emmett program wins award

EMMETT, Idaho -- The "Life on the Range" online educational project, sponsored by the Idaho Rangeland Resource Commission (IRRC), received an Excellence award from the Capital City Communicators Saturday night, April 28.

The 2012 Impact Award was presented in the Electronic and Digital Communications category. Steve Stuebner, writer and producer of Life on the Range, accepted the award on behalf of Gretchen Hyde, executive director of the Idaho Rangeland Resource Commission, and Marc Morris, editor and director of Life on the Range (www.lifeontherange.org).

This is the second year in a row that the Life on the Range project received a top award from an organization of media and public relations professionals. Last year, the project received First Place honors in the Public Relations - Media Campaign division of the Idaho Press Club 2011 awards.

Stuebner, a public relations and marketing professional in Boise, manages the multi-media campaign, its Facebook and twitter sites, and writes the video scripts and feature stories. Morris, of Avitamarc Productions in Meridian, directs and edits the videos. Hyde oversees the project direction. Other support personnel include a webmaster who places the stories, videos, photos and web links on the Life on the Range web site.

"It has been a total privilege to work on the Life on the Range project," Stuebner said. "The ranchers and other folks we have profiled are unsung heroes in terms of their proactive land management, fish- and wildlife-enhancement and stewardship activities. It's really neat to bring those stories to life."

Life on the Range currently features 14 stories and videos on the web site. The project team expects to add many new stories throughout 2012 and beyond. To see the stories, go to http://www.lifeontherange.org/. Life on the Range also is on Facebook and twitter.

Two headed calf born in Emmett

A fully formed two-headed black crossbred beef calf was born Tuesday, April 10 at the 3 Bar B Ranch in the Tom’s Cabin area. According to ranch foreman, Teryn Henderson the calf was born in the early morning hours. Henderson and his wife, Aimee, live at the ranch with their seven children and “one on the way.”

Henderson said that they knew the cow was going to deliver that night or early in the morning because she kept turning in circles until late in the evening. Early the next morning, while it was still dark, Henderson went to the barn and noticed that the cow was lying down.

“I knew that things were just not right and went to work to help her out,” Henderson said.

He felt inside to find the head and found two. Thinking there were twins, he tried to find the four front feet. He only found two and knew that something wasn’t right.

Henderson called his neighbor, Doug Brock, who lives a mile down the road, for help to get the calf out. Brock came right over to assist.

A calf puller was used to deliver the calf. When they pulled it out, they saw that the calf had two heads and one body. The calf did not survive.

“I haven’t seen anything like that for about 35 years,” Brock said. “I have seen thousands of cattle born and I’ve never seen a two-headed perfect calf.” There were two necks and two perfectly formed heads.
